Application Requirements for US and Brazilian Students

Step by Step | US Students | Brazilian Students

Step by step

This is an overall step-by-step necessary for US students. For Brazilian students, please contact your local coordinator (listed below). Students are encouraged to work closely with their adviser and the FIPSE exchange program coordinator at their home university. Please keep in mind that additional steps might be necessary. It usually takes 3 to 4 months to get ready.

  • Before leaving to Brazil
  1. Fill out home university application (contact your local coordinator listed below) and/or Texas A&M University application and apply for the FIPSE exchange program.
  2. Verify passport validity. Check recommendations at a Brazilian Consulate or Embassy.
  3. Submit the application to the sought Brazilian university (send a copy to Texas A&M University) and wait for their approval and application forms. Student has to select the courses at the Brazilian university and check for equivalency at their home university. Recommended courses can be found here.
  4. Student need to take 2 tests, production test and the Portuguese test (FLATS by BYU). Cathryn Clement’s office will make the arrangements for the Portuguese test.
  5. Contact a Brazilian Consulate or Embassy to make an appointment to get the appropriate Brazilian VISA. Take the Brazilian university forms, our support letter, and other documents needed by the Brazilian consulate of embassy to get the Brazilian VISA. Cathryn Clement will issue the support letter containing information about the financial support and the FIPSE exchange program.
  6. Decide on the arrival date in Brazil with the Brazilian university. An immersion Portuguese course might be needed. We have arrangements with private institutes at both places (Recife and Pirassununga) to provide intensive Portuguese classes. We strongly suggest students to take at least 2 weeks of intensive Portuguese classes; the course will be paid by the FIPSE exchange program.
  7. Cathryn Clement’s office purchases the flight tickets.
  8. The stipend payments will be organized by Cathryn Clement’s office.  The Borlaug Institute/Texas A&M University will issue 50% of the stipend (the other 50% will be given around the middle of the stay)
  9. Student has to purchase health insurance and medevac/repatriation insurance.
  10. Student has to make arrangements for local transportation and lodging while in Brazil. The coordinators in Brazil will assist with these arrangements.
  11. Student travels to Brazil.
  • While in Brazil
  1. Student will be registered to the FIPSE Ruminant Production course at WebCT (TAMU). Student has to maintain an active weekly/biweekly blog/journal about about adaptation, courses, progresses, studies, visits, travels, etc.
  2. Student finishes the courses and comes back to the US.
  • After arrival in the US
  1. Student has to prepare a presentation and a report (up to 10 pages) about the exchange program and lessons learned during the stay in Brazil.
  2. Student will take two tests (production test and the Portuguese test).
  3. Student will keep entering information in the blog/journal at WebCT for at least 2 months after arrival.
